Growing up, I attended Japanese school on Saturdays, pounding my head with countless Japanese "kanji" characters, practicing them over and over again until my hand felt close to paralyzed. But because I studied them for so many years, I can understand the meaning and origins of each.
I recently modeled & styled T-shirts for a new brand, Tokyo Typo Store, which re-examines and redefines meanings and origins of Japanese kanji characters, and conveys emotion and design through graphics and illustrations. 子供の頃、毎週土曜日は日本語学校に通っていました。週一回の漢字テストのために、腕が痛くなるまで漢字を何度も何度も練習した記憶があります。でも、たくさん練習したお陰で、今では漢字の由来や意味を理解することができます。
最近、知り合いの新しいTシャツブランドのモデルとスタイリングをやらせて頂きました。「Tokyo Typo Store」は、漢字が本来持つ由来と意味を再確認、再定義し、グラフィックやイラストレーションなどの表現を用いて、更にエモーショナルな形にデザインしていくプロジェクトです。考えさせるようなイラストレーションもあるので、漢字は面白いんだな、と思いました。全てのデザインを、是非チェックしてみて下さい！
