ELEGANT Magazine August Issue No. 27 "White Minimalism"

It's a rarity and an honor to be published in a fashion magazine, so I'm really excited to share this editorial with you. ELEGANT Magazine August Issue No. 7 - "White Minimalism" with photography by Apple Sabrina Chua, hair by Maiko Kurishima, makeup by Mami Abe, and modeling by me. We decided to work the "white" theme into my hair and makeup, which really pulled all the looks together to create this minimal theme. Many thanks to my amazing team for making this happen, and for ELEGANT Magazine for this beautiful spread!

Rio de Sol Brazilian swimwear

September is approaching, and summer is coming to an end. Summer seems never-ending, but before you know it, fall arrives and it's back to school, back to work. I was lucky to have been able to visit one of Japan's beaches for a photo shoot, and luckier that Rio de Sol sent me this swimwear set, including a pareo, bracelet and Havaianas. I semi-consciously chose this halter top and bottom set (I surprisingly didn't own a simple black one), and it turns out to be a swimwear trend this summer. For more, check out my post on halter swimwear here.

Tokyo isn't blessed with the beaches I grew up so close to in Huntington Beach, California, but they are nonetheless beautiful in their own way. My photographer Lasse captured the moodiness of this cloudy beach quite perfectly. Definitely put another check mark next to my summer to-do list.

J Soul Brothers from EXILE TRIBE "Feel So Alive" music video

I'm so excited to announce one of my most recent works as a model. Jpop's hottest group, J Soul Brothers 3rd Generation from EXILE TRIBE's newest single and music video, "Feel So Alive" is now up on Youtube, and I was fortunate enough to be casted as one of the models in the video. Keeping to traditional Japanese themes but adding Western influences is what makes this video so fresh and unique. It was an honor to work with such an amazing team and to see these talented boys up close. Now I see why they are so popular.

三代目J Soul Brothers from EXILE TRIBEの新曲PV、「Feel So Alive」に出演させて頂きました!

You can see the entire video below or on Youtube here.

The hair, makeup and costumes were so elaborate and nothing like I've seen or worn before. Caroline, Justine and I each represented the wild boar, deer and butterfly from the Japanese playing cards.

Make sure to check out the video and song!

「Feel So Alive」

PARCO Renewal featuring Samantha Mariko

My very first large-scale ad for PARCO department store in Chofu, Tokyo. I am so honored to be the image model for their store renewal, and to have worked with an amazing team who believed in my skills as a model. And so weird to be posing in front of my own photo... but hey, I'm probably never going to do something like this again. I enjoyed every minute of this project, and I hope you like what you see. Thank you PARCO! You can view the ad on their website here.

Accepting yourself

In the last 5 years, I've changed significantly - my look, my style, the way I view life. 5 years can seem long to some, short to others. To me, it's both. I went from a university student studying piano to Tokyo-based model, went from long, light-brown locks to short, black chops. In terms of looks, I've learned to fully appreciate the features given to me from my parents. Even my terrible complexion that is half-genetic and also caused by stress and other factors, are now my battle scars.

If I had stayed in my hometown after college, I would have never known the world I am in right now. Living alone, away from my family, trying to navigate this country that is sometimes familiar, more oftentimes confusing because of my American ways. I've lost people, but gained connections and friendships of more people who have watched me grow, suffer, then grow some more. I am nowhere near perfect, but I'm finally learning to accept myself, the things I cannot change, and also the things I can improve.

It might take some a long time before they are truly comfortable in their own skin, and that's fine. But it really doesn't help to compare yourself to others, to be better than other people, and not be a better version of yourself. I can say that it didn't really help me. Find inspiration in others and your surroundings, and incorporate that into your ever-changing self. Then maybe, people will find inspiration in you, too. Love yourself first - it will change everything only in good ways.

bright morning sun

Not all of our days are our best days, but we can make them better through our own willpower. But most of all, it's the people we surround ourselves with who give us that willpower, the motivation to keep on moving no matter how dark the storm, how dreary the light. Thank you for believing in me, thank you for accepting me as I am, thank you for making me strive harder for the goals I want to achieve. Time and time again, I can't express enough through words how thankful I am for the people in my life. The reason why I can't wait to see the morning sun, bright and shining.

Embrace simplicity

I finally had a chance to do a photo shoot session to update my modeling portfolio - these are just a few from the batch. Ever since I dyed my hair black, my makeup routine has changed as well. Changing my hair color and chopping it shorter made me realize that a more natural, simplified look is actually better. In these photos, I'm only NARS Sheer Glow Foundation and Radiant Creamy Concealer  Even for my daily makeup routine, I've been skipping eyeliner and mascara most days now. I just use a neutral eyeshadow, fill in my eyebrows with a brow powder, and curl my lashes with the Shu Uemura eyelash curler.

I've changed my hair style quite a few times in the past 4-5 years, and one thing I've realized is that your haircut and hair color really determine how your makeup should be done. It took me a while to know what looks good on me in terms of face shape and skin color, but I think this little black bob + fringe is here to stay, well, at least for a while. Have you had a similar experience where a change in hairstyle has made you simplify your look, or change your makeup routine? Let me know in the comments!

Backstage with Maybelline Japan for Sulvam

Before the John Lawrence Sullivan show yesterday, I visited backstage with Maybelline Japan to check out the makeup for the show.

Renowned Japanese makeup artist MIZU explained that the concept of John Lawrence Sullivan's 2015 Fall/Winter collection is all about the futuristic look, with pale nudes and touches of shimmer around the eyes. Some of the products he used were the Super Mineral 24 Liquid Foundation, the Pure Glow Mineral Powder Foundation, and the Big Eyes Eyeshadow. He also used Essie nail polish 501 in au natural. It's amazing how high in quality Maybelline products are, and at such an affordable price. MIZU did a phenomenal job creating an icy, futuristic look for each of the models. Y

ou all will love the photos I'll be posting next - of the actual show! Stay tuned :)
